PLAN AND OBJECTIVES

The Unda Maris musical association came into being in 1994 through an initiative of maestro Giulio Arena, a lecturer at the Vincenzo Bellini Conservatory in Palermo. Its objectives include the spread of culture among the general public, as well as higher training for the students of musical institutes and for young musicians. Its partners and supporters include personalities that in various ways operate in the sphere of cultivated music.
For several years the intense activity of Unda Maris was prevalently concerned with organising the Unda Maris international piano competition. Now its ambition is to present an Academy for Advanced Musical Studies, the fruit of collaboration with the San Pietro church, offering in its structure and in the choice of its teachers a quality level equal to that of the most prestigious international academies and making all possible efforts to create a training model taking into account the geographical, historical, cultural and technological coefficients that the present insistently demands.
Among the objectives of the Musical Academy there are the following:

  • to promote music as an integral part of culture, bearing in mind the evolution of its borders, in both geographical and technological terms;
  • at the same time promoting growth of lay and religious musical culture, in the awareness that these are two spheres that, though they have traditionally been considered separate, can instead coexist and develop in a single project;
  • to set alongside the traditional aesthetical and historical approach other approaches linked to psychology, sociology, ethnography, cultural anthropology, semiotics and computer science;
  • to adopt music as a factor of individual and social growth and as a prompting to creativeness;
  • to publish the results of its own experiences and to make them available to society;
  • to favour concert activity both as a fundamental element of teaching and training and as a service to the public;
  • to provide musical operators with further means of knowledge and in-depth examination, in terms of both human and instrumental resources.

The Academy aims to achieve these objectives through a complex and integrated system which together with the first-level and advanced training courses includes:

  • master classes and special courses;
  • musical contests;
  • seminars, conferences and workshops;
  • activity of musical comparison and research through the creation of a specialised journal for the spread of information;
  • creation of decentralised concert seasons in order geographically to favour musical culture being taken to geographically and socially disadvantaged areas;
  • creation of a series of seminars for setting going comparative study able to highlight the structural, stylistic and contextual elements common or analogous to different musical cultures;
  • creation of a transversal service centre linking musical operators, talented artists and institutions dealing with the promotion of culture.

For the attainment of these objectives, the academy makes use of musicians, musicologists, composers and musical operators of world fame.
The condition necessary for the pursuit of the aims listed and for the affirmation of the institute as an international cultural reference point is the indisputable quality of the teaching staff and of all personalities that will be involved in the activities.
For the realization of its institutional goals, the academy, consistently with the national development plans for Higher Artistic and Musical Training, will promote and activate forms of cooperation with other academies, universities, research centres, local, national and international bodies, academic, cultural and economic institutions, public or private, also in decentralized places.

Inside the structure of the Academy there is the recording studio of Unda Maris Edizioni, which is available for all needs linked to the artistic activity of teachers and students.
